Marseille

Must-see places
- The Vasarely Foundation contains seven massive glass domed hexagonal rooms that each house six large scale works by the artist. They are in a variety of mediums including tapestry, plastic, and metal and they represent the most stunning collection of the artist that can be found anywhere. The building was designed by Vasarely himself. The Foundation is located in Aix-en-Provence.
The Musée Granet is a superb collection of work from the middle ages through the 20th century. Notable works include a Rembrandt self portrait (pictured) and a large work by Ingres, Jupiter and Thetis. The museum is located in the center of Aix-en-Provence- The Fondation Maeght located near St. Paul de Vence, is one of the world’s cutting edge Museums. The Maeght’s are most notable for having supported Joan Miró, and the garden of the Museum, which was once the house of Aimé Maeght, is actually a showcase for sculptures and fountains by Miró, as well as work by other sculptors.
- The Matisse Chapel is located near St. Paul de Vence and is truly remarkable in the way it expresses the Côte d’Azur. I recommend going for Sunday Mass and sticking around for the tour afterwards (and it’s free!) but be early.
